# Monthly limit and no surprise charges

> What happens at your monthly event limit: emails at 80% and 100%, collection pauses until the reset or an upgrade, and nothing is charged automatically.

**No surprise charges, ever.** When you reach your monthly limit we pause
collection and email you. We never charge you more unless you choose to
upgrade, or you turned on automatic upgrades yourself.

## How the limit works

The limit is your plan's monthly allowance (plus the badge bonus on the
Free plan). It is the same on every plan: Free, Pro, Business and
Enterprise.

1. At **80%** of the allowance, everyone who manages billing (owners,
admins, the Billing role) and your extra billing emails get an email
with the reset date and an **Upgrade your plan** button.
2. At **100%**, collection **pauses at once** for every site in the
workspace. New pageviews and custom events are not recorded, and you get
a second email saying so. The dashboard shows a banner and the billing
page shows **Collection paused: limit reached**.
3. Collection **resumes on its own** when the count resets on the 1st of
the next month (UTC), or **right away** when the allowance goes up: an
upgrade or a verified badge bonus.

Each email goes out once a month. If you upgrade and later reach the new
allowance in the same month, you are told again.

While collection is paused:

- Your sites keep working normally. The tracker gets its usual response,
so visitors never see an error.
- Your existing data, dashboards, reports and the API are untouched.
- What never counts keeps working: Web Vitals, click maps and engagement
pings for visits already recorded, uptime checks, imports and API calls.
Bots are still counted in the bot totals.
- Server-side events get the status `dropped` with the reason
  `limit_reached` (see [Server-side events](/docs/server-side)).

## Automatic upgrades (opt in)

In **Workspace settings → Billing → Billing details** you can turn on
**Upgrade automatically at the limit**. It is **off by default** and needs
an active subscription, so it does nothing on the Free plan. With it on,
reaching the limit moves you to the next tier and charges the prorated
difference instead of pausing collection. We email you when it happens. You
can turn it off at any time.

The next tier is the smallest one above your allowance, on the same plan
and billing interval. Pro at its largest tier (50 million events) moves to
Business at 100 million. If no bigger tier exists, collection pauses as
usual. Enterprise plans are never changed automatically.

- With it on, the 80% email tells you which tier you would move to and
that the prorated difference would be charged, so you can turn it off
first if you prefer to pause.
- If you turn it on **while collection is already paused at the limit**,
the upgrade happens as soon as you save, and collection resumes. The
billing page tells you the tier before you save.
- If the upgrade can't go through (for example the payment is declined),
nothing is charged, collection pauses and the email tells you why.

## Why a hard limit

A limit you can see is easier to plan for than a bill you can't. You
always know the most a month can cost: the price of the plan you picked.
