What keeps people on Google Analytics isn't love. It's fear. Fear of losing years of history. Fear the numbers won't match and nobody will trust them. Fear of an afternoon lost to setup that goes wrong. So the switch sits on the list for another quarter, and another. Meanwhile every visit keeps going to an advertising company, behind a banner that costs you visitors every day. And there's a quieter risk. Everything Google Analytics holds about your visitors is held somewhere, by someone, and you'd be the one explaining it if that ever went wrong. A year of that, for want of ten minutes.

Minute one. Create an account and add your site. Minute two. Copy one line and paste it next to your Google Analytics tag. Keep both for now. Your first visitor appears within seconds. Minute three. Bring your history. Connect Google with read-only access, pick your property, choose the dates, and the import runs by itself onto the same chart. Minute five. Recreate your conversions as goals. A purchase, a signup, a booked call. Goals here apply backwards, so they cover everything since you pasted the line. Now run both tools for a few weeks and compare. Expect more visitors here, because nobody had to click accept to be counted. Minute ten. Remove the Google tag. If analytics was the only reason for your banner, ask whoever handles your privacy whether it can go too. From here on, no visit goes to Google. Nothing about your visitors is stored that could ever leak, because IP addresses are never kept and there are no profiles.

Your history came with you. Your numbers got more complete, not less. There's nothing stored about your visitors to lose sleep over. And the thing you put off for a year took ten minutes.
